The Power of Fragrance

Fragrances convey a message about the wearer that is more pronounced than any accessory. The type of scent that is worn can articulate anything from flirty to authoritative and everything in between. The strong connection between smell and memory association give perfumes a rare power to stimulate the senses. Even the most expensive designer clothing is a poor match to the right perfume, just as the biggest diamond is unable to illuminate the personality traits that a well-chosen fragrance can reveal .

Woman's Rites

From the earliest concoctions of oils mixed with crushed herbs, to the latest scientific innovations like re-creating perfectly the fragrance of freshly blossomed flowers, the progress of perfume development has grown exponentially over the years. The most important aspects, however, have remained consistent; the ritualistic use and application.

Throughout history, preparation for the observance of customs and rituals meant readying the body and soul for the experience. From corporate functions to community gatherings and romantic nights out, modern social occasions are the prevailing equivalent to ancient ceremonies. In recent civilization, preparing for a special occasion or a social event has become a rite in itself. Cleansing the body, an elaborate coiffure, lavish attire, ornamental accessories and the application of make-up to highlight preferred features and conceal less favourable ones are all tasks conducted methodically and judiciously in anticipation of the occasion. The ritualistic application of oils have always added the finishing touches to preparation and served to add overall enhancement to a ceremony. Today's version of anointment is a carefully chosen perfume selected to conjure up a specific image or idea. Just like in the past, fragrance is applied with a specific thought process or goal in mind.

Amplified By Touch

Perfume should be applied to spots on the body that have good blood circulation and that are particularly warm. The heat from the body amplifies the scent through diffusion. The best spots, where a heartbeat can be felt, are called pulse points and the most commonly known ones are the inside of the wrists and below the ear lobes. Fragrance naturally rises, so another great place to apply is behind the knees and on the inside of the elbows.

Dabbing perfume is the preferred method of application for two reasons. Firstly, the tactile aspect upholds the timeless sensuality of ritual and secondly, dabbing reduces the wastage that can occur when opting to spray or spritz. A common misconception is that after applying fragrance to the wrist, one should then rub the wrists together to further diffuse the scent. This is not the case, as rubbing the wrists together only serves to damage the scent by interfering with the perfumes carefully formulated evaporation process.

Scent Effects

Studies have proven that fragrance has a very real physiological effect. It affects emotions by stimulating the senses, with the ability to encourage one's mood, be it negative or positive. Scent also has the powerful ability to shape memories. Aromatherapy, a type of homeopathic medicine, is practiced by using essential oils to heal by affecting mood and rebalancing the body and mind. Some well-known examples include citrus, which has been shown to invigorate and energize, and lavender, which is renowned for its calming effects.

A frequently asked question regarding perfumes is whether certain scents can be considered an aphrodisiac. Smell is definitely associated with sexual attraction, not dissimilar to when animals release pheromones to entice a mate, but there is no scientific evidence to suggest that any one scent will increase libido. However, the confidence that is generated from wearing a magnificent scent undeniably enhances sexual attraction and discovering a fragrance that perfectly complements the wearer's natural body chemistry can absolutely inspire heightened arousal.

Fragrance from common scent groups
Even though the progress of perfume has ‘grown exponentially over the years’ as this article states; there are still basically only 6 common fragrance groups.
They include Chypre, Citrus, Floral, Fougere, Green and Oriental. Although some of the fragrance group names are pretty self explanatory others may seem mystifying. Chypre is the simply the French word for Cyprus and so named after the island bearing the same name, by Frances Coty. Fougere is the French word for Fern and this fragrance group includes fern scents amoung other select fresh herbs.
